The American dream doesn’t always look the way we imagine it. Especially when you get into the outback. We visited Texas, one of the richest states in the United States, and saw what ordinary Americans drive.
Wealth and luxury are very far away here.
As you know, the best-selling car in the United States is the Ford F-series pickup truck. Moreover, this car was the best—selling in the world in 2017 – more than a million copies, of which almost 900 thousand were sold in the USA. Yes, this is the country of pickups. And Texas is even more so. But in sparsely populated ghost towns, the picture is different. Very depressing and at the same time lamp-warm. There are well-preserved copies from the 70s, and outright trash, which they also drive.
The roads in Texas are perfectly flat. Like an iron. Therefore, the Americans paid little attention to the suspension settings. On such roads that a spring pickup truck, that a “pneumatic” Mercedes will go almost the same way.
In general, the Texas fleet looks pretty shabby. The basis consists of pickups and SUVs of various colors, age and condition. But at the same time, it is noticeable that cars do not stand as monuments to themselves, but are operated.
The tour of the small Texas town of Marfa turned out to be very eventful. Only one and a half thousand inhabitants live there. We assume that there are one and a half times more cars. That’s the way America works.
The crossroads in Marfa. There are STOP signs on all four sides. The first car to pass is the one that arrived before everyone else. But it is necessary to establish eye contact with other drivers.
Volkswagen Karmann-Ghia. Almost an iconic car in the USA. But here, in the outback, two cars live out their lives at once. Or maybe they are waiting in the wings to recover?
Two more legends — “124” and “126”. Both are diesel. By the way, the diesel W126 was just delivered only to the US and Canadian markets.
You say there are no French cars in the USA? Please — Renault Stepway. Did you not know that it is officially shipped to the local market? Joke. In fact, this car came from Mexico, and the picture was taken near the border.
