How to restore furniture with your own hands

Furniture loses its appearance over the years, fades, scuffs, cracks and chips, the details located in it begin to appear on it, begin to rust. And if there is no financial possibility for new furniture, then you can give a “second life” of old furniture by restoring it, and you can do it with your own hands.

You need to prepare very carefully for restoration. It is necessary to examine the object carefully and wash all parts with warm soap water with a soft sponge. The soap should be on a natural basis, and the water is by no means hot. If there is a thread on the furniture, then you can use a regular toothbrush with the same soapy water, and if you can use toothpicks on the objects. The cooked plaque is removed using fine sandpaper, only the movements should be very neat.

After cleaning furniture from dirt, unwanted spots and dust, we begin to restore.

Details that cannot be restored must be replaced. Details can be searched in markets, buy in specialized stores, make an order or make it yourself. Of course, for the latter you need equipment and special skills. If it is upholstered furniture, then it is better to replace the fabric with a new.

It is also necessary to tighten the twisted bolts and fasteners. If some details are rusted, it is necessary to put new. You need to see if there are cracks and faults on the subject. The former are connected by special glue, and the latter are sealed with putty. After that, we proceed to eliminate the old finish, it can be removed using sandpaper (you can also purchase a special solvent). This is a rather time -consuming process, but the necessary. The main thing is to do all the actions very carefully so as not to damage the materials.

After cleaning, we proceed to varnishing furniture or its painting. Varnish is selected for the texture and type of furniture. But it is better to take an acrylic paint, it will protect furniture from destruction. Apply paint in three layers with a sponge, letting each layer dry.

Furniture staining and varnishing – two of the simplest restoration options. In addition, there is decoupage (gluing applications), craquelure (applying a varnish that imitates ancient wood), lamination (an veneer, iron and glue are taken, the surface of the furniture is covered in two layers with glue, a veneer is applied and ironed through paper or fabric). You can also decorate the old furniture with painting.

There are many methods of restoration of furniture and it all depends on skills and imagination, as well as on the presence of colors, brushes and varnishes.
